The most important function in keeping you safe while riding is having strong self-awareness skill and considering its importance, it’s a skill every rider should develop. Whether you’re a new or experienced rider or you don’t ride at all, it’s critical to cultivate an attitude of deep self-awareness.

The most common definition of self-awareness is to understand your inner self, motivations, and desires. Every decision we make while out there is a reflection of our self-awareness.

Making a good decision isn’t a static skill. It changes and evolves as we learn new things about the world and ourselves.

When it comes to riding, having self-awareness means you can acknowledge what your weaknesses are and make appropriate judgements.

A self-aware rider would constantly evaluate the road ahead and watch out for potential hazards. Those dangers can be other road users, objects on the road, or the road itself.

Riding a motorcycle requires constant vigilance, hence, once a potential risk is identified, the process continues with anticipating what could happen and preparing a plan of action for how to avoid the risk.

However, you’re not done there. You continue evaluating further ahead and repeating the process; over and over!
