If there is something that every one of us has in common, it is that we all call one place home; our beloved planet earth. Our home, however, is under threat. And every day we interact with our environment tells a story of whether we truly love our planet or not.
Though some are making an effort as champions of the environment striving for healthier planet earth, in our little ways, we too can try to limit pollution and make an effort to reduce our carbon footprints. These are some things you can start doing today to play your part.
Volunteer When & Where You Can
When you have the opportunity, volunteering for various causes is always a wonderful idea. Finding a group or organisation that cleans parks and beaches is a wonderful place to start. You might also take a few pals and go to a nearby location to help out. Every time you do this, you can be sure that you are making a difference in your modest way.
Plant A Tree
Planting a tree is easier than a lot of us realise. If you feel overwhelmed by the task, ask someone who knows about it. This could be in your backyard, a public garden or any open space in your neighbourhood. Again this sort of activity can be more fun if you do it in a group or with friends.
Use less plastic
Way too many tons of plastic (about 14M) end up in our oceans every year. Making an effort not to use or reuse plastic can make a huge difference. When you go to the market take a bag with you so you don’t have to use plastic shopping bags. Also, try to prioritise products that don’t use plastic. It all counts for something.
Recycle
To reduce your waste, you could give away old clothes, toys, gadgets, and even kitchen goods to those in need. There are lots of things we do not use anymore that could be useful for others. If you are also inclined to take up composting, you can learn which and how your waste can be put to other use, like as a fertilizer for example.
Consume seasonal and local products
Eating seasonal, local produce helps to lessen your food’s environmental footprint by requiring less energy for cultivation and shipping. It also benefits the local economy, and because seasonal fruits and vegetables are selected at their natural flavour and nutritional optimum, they frequently taste better.
Reduce your transportation carbon footprint
Another impactful way to show your love for the environment is to prioritize transport without CO2 emissions. This means that you should take a walk to places where you can, or take a shared vehicle (a vehicle for multiple passengers) instead of driving. Likewise, you could also plan your journeys with vehicles with zero emissions such as electric or hybrid vehicles.
Start a vegetable garden
Everyone loves fresh vegetables. What if you, your family, and/or your neighbours had fresh vegetables ready to go anytime you needed them. It would sure make you one of the well-liked neighbours.
By taking the time and effort to do these little things, you may not single-handedly save the planet, however, your efforts may inspire others and collectively we can all make our planet healthier right from our little corners of the world.
