Transportation in 2040: What it could look like

When the phrase ‘the future of transportation’ is read, what comes to mind is likely teleportation, flying vehicles or technology like the metaverse. All these are epic thoughts and ideas, however, they are far vis not so far from us.

According to an article published in 2019 by Geotab, the future of transportation looks very promising, with new, cleaner sources of energy, means of transportation, and physical and technological infrastructure.

There are three facets through which transportation innovation can occur. These are;

  • Smart technology,
  • User Autonomy, and
  • Electrification.

Let’s take a look at user autonomy in Autonomous Aerial Vehicles.

Autonomous Aerial Vehicles: In the not-too-distant future, there is a possibility of radical autonomic transportation that allows for individual passengers to transport themselves without having to be concerned about controlling or operating the aircraft. Passengers can just sit and enjoy the journey. AAVs, as they are called are similar to drones in that they are unmanned.

A demo with these specifications already exists called the EHang. The EHang’s technology design concept is superior to traditional manned aircraft as it allows an autonomous pilot and centralized control of the intelligent command-and-control centre. This low-altitude passenger-grade autonomous aerial vehicle is both eco-friendly and clever, making it viable in the nearest future.

Another example of this is self-driving taxis which are already in use in cities like Las Vegas.

Smart technology: A short-and medium-haul transportation solution is needed for future intelligent transportation. This is perhaps what inspired Elon Musk to develop The Hyperloop. The Hyperloop train concept aims that by 2030, Virgin Hyperloop could be transporting people and freight in 45 minutes from London to Edinburgh, or in 30 minutes from New York to Washington, DC.

The futuristic pods in Virgin Hyperloop, which reach speeds of up to 670 miles per hour, are propelled via a vacuum tube by electromagnets, which eliminates the air resistance faced by other modes of transportation, giving it the mindblowing speed — its’ peculiar offering.

This will leverage reduced time for transportation, which is a concept that is unequivocally fused with technology and cannot be separated.

Reduced time = Smart transportation technology.

Electrification: Electric is safer and cleaner — protects the environment and is largely more efficient. Little wonder, it is identified as a facet of transportation innovation. Many auto manufacturers are scurrying to accommodate and tap into the rapidly growing electric mobility industry.

This is the facet through which MAX is redefining change in the transport industry.

The future of transportation can be summarised in the phrase ‘Autonomy in smart technology and electrification’. Won’t that be beautiful — An electric E-Hang?!
